Sea Trout Festival

Regional info

The southern part of Swedish Lapland dominates the county Västerbotten, which is of the same size as Ireland. The county shows a great variety in environment and fishing opportunities. From the relatively flat region on the coast, to the forests and the lakes in the middle of the county, and finally the mountains that separate the county from Norway.

The vast county also gives the opportunity to discover different seasons during a few days travel. A full winter in the mountains will change to spring and early summer when you move towards the coast. You can enjoy ice fishing for arctic char in late May in the mountains, drive down to the coast and try the Baltic pike or the first step of Baltic salmon that has returned from the Baltic Sea.

The largest town in the county of Västerbotten is Umeå, a university town with approximately 110 000 citizens. The second and third are Skellefteå (the closest town to the famous river Byske älv) and Lycksele. The last one Lycksele, has only 9 000 citizens and is also known as the “capital of Lapland”. The population in the county is concentrated to the coast and the inner part of Lapland has less than 1 person per square km.
